    2016 – Dubai, UAE

Presented by NAKKASH Gallery and premiered at Design Days Dubai 2016, FORMA is an exploration of forms and shapes that result from the connection and interconnection of sphere-shaped components via a modular installation. This is a further study of how a group of similar 2D elements can create a three dimensional form as they connect and interconnect. Fluidity and continuity throughout the form is key to maintaining the installation’s size and scale.
Each component in FORMA is made of 29 connected and interconnected Agaals – the black woven rope band men in the Arab world wear to secure their head covers. These are linked together with wires and embedded with circular cut-outs of colored transparent Plexiglas to reflect light through. Each component is a singular illumination object that, when combined with others, become a whole illumination installation.
FORMA is made of 12 spherical components, each of 60cm diameter. The installation spans 5.1 meters with variable heights. 348 Agaals, a signature material to KHALID SHAFAR, were used to make this unique installation, creating a magical, fairy tale illumination experience.
As an integral part of the product experience, an invitation was extended from NAKKASH Gallery to 15 of its VIP guests to enjoy an exclusive themed dining experience under FORMA. Having the culinary experience under the installation, surrounded by the special editorial photographs of well-known Emirati photographer Saeed Khalifa, showcased FORMA on a live stage and was the perfect setting for the installation’s premiere during this year’s fair edition.
