  • S*uce Benches Project

    2011, Dubai, UAE

Every year S*uce collaborates with local and international artists on projects to coincide with Art Dubai in March. This year’s initiative aimed to increase the use, appreciation and number of benches in Dubai. So S*uce invited 15 artists, designers and architects including Khalid Shafar to interpret and customize “pop-up” benches provided by S*uce for display at Art Dubai and around the city during March. In Khalid’s interpretation he focused more on the functionality of this object rather than its aesthetics. He strived to realise the equation “Three equals Nine”. Benches across the globe are there to rest, relax and share moments and stories and he wanted his 3-seater bench to share its moments with more than 3. The more, the better . In his design 3 people can join 3 people, then 3 more people can join in, with a simple move or flip. This bench can welcomes 9 people if required. It also changes positions depends on the location. You can lie down on it to chill out, read or take a nap if the bench is in a park. Or it can become a dining table in a mall or on the beach. This design is ideal for bus and metro stations where fewer benches can accommodate more waited people. A touch of Gold colour was used to reflect Dubai “The City of Gold”. The metallic finish enhances the contemporary aesthetic of the bench.
