Under the Palm

Revealed in the Ajman Ruler’s Court, Under the Palm is a sculptural installation by Khalid Shafar, created in collaboration with Roar, an architecture and interior design studio based in Dubai. Paying tribute to one of the UAE’s most enduring natural icons, the palm tree, the work honours its symbolism as a marker of strength, identity, and hospitality in Emirati culture. Inspired by the organic rhythm of clustered palms, the installation creates a sheltered space that invites stillness, reflection, and reconnection.

Constructed from electroplated stainless steel and solid wood in varying tones of teak, ash, and white oak, the installation reflects the passage of time through material. Each wooden hue represents a different stage in the life of the palm tree, echoing the natural cycles of growth, ageing, and renewal. The interplay between cool metal and warm wood anchors the work in both tradition and contemporary design.

As part of Shafar’s ongoing dialogue with nature as a muse, Under the Palm becomes more than an architectural form. It is a space to gather, to pause, and to reflect. Rooted in place and memory, it stands as a timeless gesture of environmental awareness, cultural pride, and quiet beauty.
