The Auction transforms a familiar ritual of exchange into a contemporary collection, drawing on memories of Dubai’s informal trading traditions. Its name recalls Lelaam, a word meaning ‘auction’ that was once called out by merchants as they moved through the city’s neighborhoods with fabric sacks filled with goods. Rather than retelling this history literally, the collection abstracts the familiar form of the fabric sack into a defining design language, wrapping structured forms in textile to soften their geometry and introduce tactile contrast. In its first table design, gathered material forms a generous base beneath a circular tabletop, with the fabric tied at its centre to conceal a storage compartment below.
Fabric becomes both surface and identity, with a choice of textiles and finishes allowing each piece to respond to a range of interiors while remaining recognizably The Auction. This adaptability gives the collection freedom to evolve across furniture categories without being tied to a single function. Rooted in memories of exchange and personal encounter, The Auction brings a chapter of Dubai’s social history into the present, creating functional pieces whose meaning extends beyond their use.
